On September 9 2022 an important milestone for the HyNetherlands project was reached with the selection of Technip Energies as the EPC contractor and John Cockerill as electrolyser supplier for the hydrogen plant. This major step forward is a key milestone in the project roll-out plan, of which phase 1 comprises a 100 MW electrolyser that will produce hydrogen for e-methanol production and deliver renewable-based hydrogen to the local mobility, maritime and industry sectors.
“It has been a marathon beginning in 2021 with the definition of the procurement strategy. Many obstacles have been overwon to get to the selection of this qualitative EPC Consortium. We are very proud of this achievement which underlines the dedication and expertise of our teams, and are looking forward to our collaboration with the consortium of Technip Energies and John Cockerill.” Grégory Bartholomé – Project Manager HyNetherlands
HyNetherlands: a large-scale green hydrogen and industrial value chain
Launched in 2019, HyNetherlands is a major project with a long-term vision to play an increasingly important role in the decarbonization of industrial and transportation sectors in the region, with plans to scale up electrolyser production capacity from 100MW in 2025 to 1.85 GW in the early 2030s. ENGIE is working alongside OCI, Europe’s largest methanol producer, and EEW, a leading company in the production of electricity and heat from the thermal recovery of waste, to develop one of the first large-scale industrial value chains in Europe to produce e-methanol. The project’s initial phase will include the construction of a 100MW electrolysis plant by Technip Energies and John Cockerill, five times bigger than the ones that currently exist. Powered by renewable electricity from offshore wind farms in the North Sea, it will supply enough renewable hydrogen for the production of e-methanol and to offer a decarbonization solution to multiple industry sectors with a high carbon footprint.
