ENGIE

ENGIE is a global reference in low-carbon energy and services.

Together with our 170,000 employees, our customers, partners and stakeholders, we are committed to accelerating the transition towards a carbon-neutral world, through reduced energy consumption and more environmentally friendly solutions. Inspired by our purpose (“raison d’être”), we reconcile economic performance with a positive impact on people and the planet, building on our key businesses (gas, renewable energy, services) to offer competitive solutions to our customers.

In the hydrogen sector, ENGIE is a front-runner since 2017 in the development of an industrial-scale hydrogen economy worldwide. Our ambition is to support the decarbonization of industrial and mobility applications around the world.

With our experts fully dedicated to hydrogen, we are the long-term partner for our customers, securing each step of a project, from origination to operation at the gigawatt scale.

We are already active in 30 large-scale hydrogen projects worldwide and aim by 2030 to develop and operate 4 GW of green hydrogen capacity, 700 km of dedicated hydrogen networks, 1 TWh of storage capacity, and more than 100 refueling stations.

In The Netherlands In the Netherlands, drawing on the expertise of 180 people, of which 65 are permanents at site, ENGIE manages three Combined Cycle power plants (“CCGT”) with an installed capacity of nearly 3 GWe, of which the Eems CCGT represents near 2 Giga Watt electrical (“GWe”) of installed capacity. EEN has the responsibility of greening the existing fleet and implementing new projects, especially hydrogen production-related projects, that support the country’s roadmap to carbon neutrality.

Role in the project

ENGIE will be responsible for the coordination, development, delivery and operation of the HyNetherlands project. ENGIE will produce and deliver the green Hydrogen and deliver to OCI.

Relevant previous projects

In the Netherlands – ENGIE has contributed to the test runs and refuelling of a hydrogen powered Coradia iLint train in 2020 in Groningen. While the interest for the region was raised and demonstrated through this joint initiative with the region, a call for tender has been opened by the Province of Groningen to develop passenger train infrastructure for feeding 4 trains in 2025.

In the South of France – Masshylia: One of the largest French renewable hydrogen production site. ENGIE and TotalEnergies will jointly design, build and operate* one of the largest French renewable hydrogen production sites in the South of France (Châteauneuf-les-Martigues) to supply TotalEnergie’s biorefinery in La Mède, avoiding the emission of 33,500 tons of CO2 per year.

In the North of France – “Reuze: Together with Infinium ENGIE will develop* a project to produce synthetic fuels in Dunkirk for use in air and sea transport. Infinium’s exclusive technology will be used to produce these ultra-low-carbon e-fuels. 300,000 tons of CO2 will be captured by ArcelorMittal from his steel production facilities and then combined with green hydrogen, produced by a 400 MW electrolyzer installed by ENGIE, which will act on the project as a global integrator.

In Australia – Yuri: Yara Pilbara and ENGIE will build a green hydrogen production facility in Australia to produce renewable ammonia. The project has received AUD 42.5 million capital expenditure grant allocation from the Australian government as part of the country’s renewable hydrogen roll-out.

In South Africa – The First hydrogen mining truck: ENGIE and Anglo American have partnered to co-create South Africa’s first renewable hydrogen-powered mining truck to replace diesel power.
ENGIE will provide the hydrogen production solutions and Anglo American will develop the vehicle.
