East Groningen may become Europe’s first regional hydrogen cluster
During Wind Meets Gas, the event in the Northern Netherlands that connects hydrogen and the offshore sector, a report was presented to Caroline Kollau, plv. Director General of the Ministry of Climate and Green Growth. The initial results show that East Groningen can develop into a leading hydrogen region.
Industriecluster Oost-Groningen
Industriecluster Oost-Groningen (East Groningen Industry Cluster) is an alliance of diverse companies in the region, all individually but also jointly focused on their contribution to the energy transition by reducing CO2 emissions.
Preliminary study
To explore the decarbonization opportunities for the cluster, New Energy Coalition, in collaboration with the industry cluster and the organizations responsible for energy supply, transmission and connection, conducted a preliminary study. The results of this preliminary study are compiled in the report.
The preliminary study shows that switching from natural gas to hydrogen is a good option for reducing the CO2 emissions of the region’s companies. The switch to hydrogen will help to decarbonize the companies and provide an impetus for the start-up of a regional hydrogen network, where the hydrogen is produced locally.
In this way, hydrogen production from Eemshaven, including from HyNetherlands, can contribute to new economic prospects for industry in the North.
